Birth centers could be forced to close unless we can stop a new amendment. Your calls are needed now!
We initially supported AB 2682 - a bill to remove physician supervision for nurse-midwives - but yet another restrictive amendment has been added by the medical lobby. We cannot allow the medical lobby to continue subverting this bill.
The medical lobby is politically influential because of the money they put into elected officials' pockets. The only way for us to counteract their influence is through voter power. We need a groundswell of California voters to call their elected officials and voice their opposition to this bill.
We must act quickly to protect access to midwifery and birth centers. That is why we have made the tough decision to oppose the bill. We need your help NOW.
Want the long version? Scroll past the maps for the full details and then be sure to take action now to preserve access to birth centers.

Senate District 13 State Senator Jerry Hill, (916) 651-4013
AB 2682 was designed to remove paternalistic physician supervision of nurse-midwives and had our full support.
Then the medical lobby added amendments designed to restrict access to midwifery care and deny pregnant people their right to informed consent and informed refusal. Learn more about the first one here.
NOW access to midwife-run birth centers is in jeopardy due to a new amendment that requires birth centers to become licensed as specialty clinics, without creating a process for them to do so.
This is particularly onerous as most California health care providers, like surgeons, are licensed as individuals, rather than being required to have their setting licensed. For example, surgeons are licensed by the State, but their offices are not required to hold a separate license.
Birth centers have been operating in California for more than 100 years without licensure. The real goal of this latest amendment is to shut down birth centers, particularly those overseen by midwives.
