We did it! The Anti-Midwifery bill is not coming back in 2018!
November 10, 2017
We just received the news that SB 457 (Bates), the “Anti-Midwifery” bill that we fought so hard against in the Spring of 2017 is not coming back in 2018! It was your calls, emails, and legislative visits that played a huge role in keeping this bill from being reintroduced! Thank you CFAM supporters! This bill could have restricted the scope of practice of midwives in California and, in doing so, encroach on the rights of families to make choices about their medical care, including where and with whom to give birth. This bill could have restricted the scope of practice of midwives in California and, in doing so, encroach on the rights of families to make choices about their medical care, including where and with whom to give birth.
Some of the language proposed in this bill had included:
Requiring those living more than 20 minutes from a hospital to birth in a hospital.
Requiring doctor permission for midwife birth for previous existing conditions (ex: laparoscopic surgery, cesarean, gallbladder surgery.)
Restricting midwives’ ability to obtain laboratory tests, or even access life saving medications.
Thank you for all your support and calls to defend birth options for families around the state. Your participation is vital to our efforts and we are fortunate to have such passionate voices for midwifery access.
California Families for Access to Midwives also thanks our partners who worked to oppose this bill, California Association of Licensed Midwives (CALM), California Nurse Midwives Association (CNMA), and California Association of Midwives (CAM).
At CFAM we are already preparing for the 2018 legislative year. Trips to Sacramento to advocate on behalf of midwifery consumers cost money; please support our entirely volunteer effort by contributing to outreach and travel costs here: http://www.cafamiliesformidwives.org/donate.
