Anti Midwifery Bill Senate Hearing and some good news for Nurse-Midwives!
April 20, 2017
Hello CFAM Activists,
We know that midwifery care is an important option for you and your family. We see that in your responses to our Calls to Actions! Thank You, You are CFAM.
We need you to do two more things:
We need midwifery, homebirth and birth center activists to show up on Monday, April 24 in Sacramento for the Senate Business and Professions Committee Hearing. We need you to oppose SB457, the Anti-Midwifery Bill. We are hopeful that, if we get enough consumers to testify about why they oppose this bill, then we will get the support we need to kill this bill on Monday. Please join our facebook event. Our message at this hearing is simple, this bill will NOT increase safety for families, there already exists good midwifery law protecting families, this will decrease options for safe maternity care in California.
Thank you for all of your calls to oppose SB457 the Anti-Midwifery Bill. We are hearing from legislators that they are getting a lot of calls, and that the calls are educating them on the importance of access to midwives and protecting homebirth!
California Certified Nurse-Midwives have a new bill to remove physician supervision, AB1612. CFAM supports this bill and we need your calls before Tuesday, April 25 to help them move this bill through the State Assembly.
We need you to call your California Assembly Member now and tell them that you support AB1612 the bill to remove physician supervision from Certified Nurse Midwives! This bill would allow Certified Nurse Midwives to create their own practices and legally be homebirth, birth center or hospital providers without a physician setting their practice guidelines.

California is one of only six states that require Certified Nurse Midwives to have physician supervision. Many California trained CNMs move to states with friendlier practice laws. This limits access to Midwifery care at a time in California when we have a massive maternity care provider shortage.
California families want greater access to CNM care because they know CNMs provide high-quality prenatal, birth and postpartum care.
With your action we were able to greatly increase access to midwives in 2013, and we need your action just as much now as we did then. You are CFAM. You are the reason that legislation gets passed or stopped. Please take the time to make these calls and show up at senate hearings.
We are showing up too! This week our President, Tanya Smith-Johnson, spent two days in Sacramento meeting with legislators and educating them on why consumers oppose SB457. We will be at the Senate Committee meeting on Monday along side you to give our testimony on why SB457 is a bad bill.
Please consider donating to CFAM, we are a volunteer staff. Our costs are adding up as we campaign this legislative season, please donate here, http://www.cafamiliesformidwives.org/donate .
