Stay informed about critical legislative developments! We will update you with details about how you can take action for Licensed Midwives California.
Who We Are
California Families for Access to Midwives includes mothers, fathers, families and their communities who advocate safe, affordable and healthy birth options. CFAM is working to improve the health of mothers and babies by increasing access to midwifery care.
We need you to make phone calls to your California State Senator’s office today!
Some info on SB 457.
SB 457 is Senator Bates’s Anti-Midwifery bill and it is a danger to the rights of childbearing families across the state.
California Families for Access to Midwives stands with California Association of Licensed Midwives (CALM), California Nurse Midwives Association (CNMA), and California Association of Midwives (CAM) to oppose this bill. SB 457 could restrict the scope of practice of midwives in California and, in doing so, usurp the rights of families to make choices about their medical care, including where and with whom to give birth.
Right now SB 457 has placeholder language: language used to fill the space before the proposed bill is entered into the record. This allows legislators to work on drafts for the bill and then to add the language later.
Some of the language that we have seen proposed for this bill includes:
If you live more than 20 minutes from a hospital you would be required to birth in a hospital.
If you’ve had a previous existing condition, like a laparoscopic surgery, a cesarean, or gallbladder surgery among others, you could be required to see a doctor for permission to give birth with a midwife.
Midwifery law could be changed restricting midwives’ ability to obtain laboratory tests, or even access life saving medications.
So, what can you do?
Call your State Senator today. You can find your representative here, http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/. If you live in Senator Bates’s district or the districts of Senators Jerry Hill, Bill Dodd, Cathleen Galgiani, Steven Glazer, Ed Hernandez, Josh Newman, Richard Pan or Scott Wilk, your calls are crucial because these are the Senators sitting on the State Senate Business and Professions Committee and they will be the first round of Senators to decide the fate of this bill.
“I am_________, and I a consumer of midwifery services calling to ask you to oppose SB457, Senator Bates’s Anti-Midwifery bill. This bill will limit birth options to families across the state, and will not increase safety. I believe that this bill is an attempt to limit where someone can give birth.”
Thanks for your support.
The whole CFAM board would like to thank you for your support and participation. Each time we have come to you for phone calls and visits you have come through! We know that you are passionate about birth, and about families having the opportunity to birth where and with whom they choose!
Now for the hard part. We also need to ask you for your financial support. It appears this is going to be a busy year for CFAM: both opposing SB 457 and supporting midwifery legislation that will increase access to midwives, as well as continuing to represent families at Medical Board Meetings, Midwifery Advisory Meetings and participating in midwifery policy making across the state. Please help us continue to be a voice for families, make a donation today through our site here http://www.cafamiliesformidwives.org/donate.
